Wagga Wagga has welcomed the opening of its first Hindu temple, giving Hindu families in the Riverina a local place to worship, celebrate traditions and connect with their community.
Located on the Wagga Wagga campus, the temple was officially opened with members of the local Hindu community joined by community and political representatives.
The Wagga Hindu Temple Organisation was congratulated for helping establish the new place of worship, which organisers said would provide a closer option for families who previously travelled to Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne to practise their faith.
The opening was described as an important addition for the region, with organisers highlighting the cultural diversity of the Riverina and the role local community spaces can play in helping people maintain religious and cultural connections.
Wagga Wagga Mayor Councillor Dallas Tout and Dr Joe McGirr MP attended the opening, with organisers also acknowledging the City of Wagga Wagga for its support.
The temple is expected to provide a space for Hindu families to gather for worship and festivals, while creating opportunities for community connection and support.
For the Wagga Hindu Temple Organisation and local Hindu families, the opening marks the establishment of a dedicated place where religious traditions can be observed closer to home.
